Russian hackers broke into a World Anti-Doping Agency database and posted confidential medical data online Tuesday of some United States female athletes who competed at the Rio Olympics — including gymnast Simone Biles, tennis players Serena and Venus Williams and basketball player Elena Delle Donne.
This is pretty much the world we live in now. If there’s information that could potentially embarrass someone, even if it’s taken completely out of context like this information appears to be, someone is going to go looking for it, and releasing it.
This is why the only safe way to store data, is to not collect it and store it in the first place. That’s why many of us feel very uncomfortable about how much data is being collected by government and commercial entities alike, and the absolute loss of privacy due to that. If data is out there, even if it’s not accurate, maybe even especially if it’s not accurate, but could harm someone that a group has decided they don’t like for whatever reason, it’s open season on pushing it out to the public.
And this is just the data that is correct but out of context. What happens when hackers release falsified data? How many more lives will be ruined by that?
